Relocation Is Really Tough On Teens.

So, you've got the Phoenix real estate bug and you decided to move to the Greater Phoenix area. Relocation is always a tough challenge, but it can be a real traumatic experience for a teenager. They can get grumpy enough if you try to get them out of bed on a Saturday morning. Imagine telling them the family is moving and they will be leaving behind friends and teen romances.

When it comes to moving, teens can face a bunch of social and emotional issues that younger children usually do not experience. At adolescence everything seems to be changing anyway, now you're asking your teen to leave his or her comfort zone and go to a new city, a new school with a new social scene where they will have to learn how "to fit-in all over again".

Teens will likely get a bit resistant to moving and may even become real angry. There will tears to shed. It's a time when parents need to be real understanding, have patience and give a little sympathy. There are several things parents can do to help relieve the angst.

1. First, don't assume your teen will be upset. He or she may actually be looking forward to a change and a fresh start at a new school in the Phoenix AZ area.

2. Teens think they are adults anyway, so get them involved in the Phoenix relocation process. Let them give input on what they feel would be the ideal new home. Show them pictures and descriptions of homes being considered. Get their thoughts and opinions.

3. Ask them to do some research on Metro Phoenix and its suburban communities and report back what they discover. Not only is this an educational process but what they discover may get them excited about moving. Becoming a meaningful part of the family's relocation plans to Phoenix may give them confidence to face a new environment.

4. Before moving, set a date that they can return to the "old place" and visit friends. And once they are settled into at their new Phoenix home, give them the comfort of being able to communicate with the friends they are leaving behind. Things like Internet connection, email and long distance phone access come to mind.

5. Most of all, empathize with them so they feel you understand the inner turmoil they are going through. Difficult as it may be, encourage your children to say goodbye to their friends. If you have a choice on when to move, work with your teen on choosing the best time.

6. When you arrive in Phoenix, get them involved in school activities and the new community quickly. The sooner they create new friends and connections to the fun spots, the sooner they will become more comfortable in the new surroundings.
